The Constiuencys

During the campaign, the candidates treveled all over Ireland to different constituencys to try and convince the locals to vote for them. Amazingly, out of 43 constituencys, Michael D Higgins came out on top of 36! It was in Galway East, Michaels home county, that he got more percentage of votes to any other constituency, a whopping 57.6%. Second placed Sean Gallgher won in 6 consituencys, Cavan-Monaghan(where he recevied a huge 45.1%), Cork North-West, Donegal South-West, Cork South-West, Roscommon South Leitrim and Tipperary North. Martin McGuinness was the only other candidate to win in any, he took 32.2% in Donegal North East. No other Candidates came anywhere near winning a constituency, Mary Davis and Dana had some shocking results, both recieving less then 3% in most constituencys.. Fine Gael must have been extremly dissapointed with the results of their candidate, Gay Mitchel who won nowhere, his best turnout being in Dublin South Central. Mitchels performance in Mayo however pretty much reflects his campaign; In the genreal election earlier this year Fine Gael won 4 out of 5 seats there, (it is also the home constituency of Taoseach Enda Kenny), yet Mitchel only won 9.2%. The  Fine Gael voters just didn't support him. David Norris had a really bad time, he recieved as little as 2.8% in Mayo, Cavan-Monaghan and Donegal North-East. He got only 2.5% in Galway East. He did okay in the Dublin constituencys but his horrific performance around the Galway, Mayo, Donegal and Kerry areas left him in 5th place, altough he did have almost twice as much 1st preference votes as the next candidates, Dana and Davis.
